ChatGPT Ads News: Understanding How ChatGPT Advertising Works

Recent ChatGPT ads news has sparked a lot of interest as OpenAI expands to include advertising capabilities within ChatGPT. After initially testing the platform with a smaller group of advertisers, ChatGPT ads are now becoming available to a much wider range of businesses, opening up a new way for brands to reach potential customers.
What Are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that appear within ChatGPT for users on free accounts. Users with paid subscriptions, educational accounts, and certain other account types do not see advertisements.
How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?
While there is more information this daily, because they are so new, many sources have missing or incorrect information. In fact, when we asked ChatGPT how to set up ads on the platform, it said they aren’t available yet!
So, we set up a test campaign to learn the details for ourselves.
Businesses that want to advertise on ChatGPT first create an advertiser account and complete a business verification process. Once approved, you can set up billing, create campaigns, and start building ads.
Budgeting is straightforward, like Google Ads (we’ll say that a lot), it’s a Cost Per Click (CPC) structure. We found the current daily minimum to be $25, which is higher than Google Ads, which can be as low as $1, or LinkedIn Ads, which is $10 per day.
Also mirroring Google Ads, setup is hierarchical, with the Campaign level being the top level where budget, objectives and locations are set. Under that, you can set up Ad Groups, where you set your maximum CPC (we’re seeing this number around $3 or $4), and your context hints. This is where ChatGPT Ads diverge from Google Ads: these aren’t keywords that you can exactly match; rather they are conversational topics that may be of interest to your audience. Remember, people are searching for information differently than they do on Google- think conversational, asking for advice, rather than short, targeted keywords. Finally, Ads fall under Adgroups. These are much simpler than Google ads: you upload one image, one title, one description and one link. There’s no responsive ads, where they’re built based on the search.
On the results side, advertisers can choose campaign goals such as generating website clicks or conversions, and can track results using conversion events (via a pixel placed on your website) and analytics tools. Conversion tracking through the Ads Manager allows businesses to measure actions such as form submissions, purchases, and other valuable website events.
What Makes ChatGPT Ads Different?
One of the most unique features highlighted in recent ChatGPT ads news is the ability to provide contextual targeting hints using natural language. Instead of relying on predefined audience categories, advertisers can describe the types of products, services, industries, or customer needs they want to target. For example, a digital marketing agency might include topics such as:
- Website design
- Search engine optimization (SEO)
- Branding
But because this is a natural language tool that uses AI to decide who is the best target for your ads, we suggest thinking more creatively than that, because the platform will see those keywords on the page you’ve linked on your ad. Some things we’d suggest include:
- Website development for funded startups
- Marketing firm with high level, experienced marketers
- My brand feels outdated
- How do I get more customers
- Should I hire a marketing agency?
- We’re invisible on Google
- My website doesn’t get any traffic
- Fix my Webflow Website
Another side of the ad development to pay attention to is the number of Ad Groups and Ads you create. Advertisers are encouraged to create multiple ad variations, which can include testing CPC amounts and contextual clues at the AdGroup level, as well as different images, headlines, descriptions, or even entirely different service offerings at the ad level. ChatGPT’s AI then evaluates performance signals and helps determine which combinations are most likely to generate clicks and conversions. During our test campaign, we only ran a couple Ad Groups with a couple Ads and got some impressions, but no clicks. This is a brand new platform; it’s learning and so are its users, so you need to catch a very wide net to get some traction. So, our advice is to start with a Campaign and load up at least 10 Ad Groups with at least 2 ads per adgroup. Run for a week, check results, optimize. Do that for a month and see if you’re ready to run it for another month without optimizations.
The Future of ChatGPT Advertising
Advertising is becoming an important part of the platform as AI continues to grow and more ChatGPT ads news arises. The combination of conversational AI, natural-language targeting, and AI-driven optimization offers a different approach from traditional online advertising.
