Commercial Interior Design Trends We Saw at NeoCon 2026

Even though I spend my summers working here (a graphic design agency), my heart (and ongoing education) is in interior design. Luckily, my boss was nice enough to give me a half day off so we could explore NeoCon, the leading commercial interior design convention, together. (Thanks, mom ;). After exploring the endless showrooms that Chicago’s iconic The Mart has to offer, we’ve compiled a list of commercial interior design trends that we noticed were prominent amongst many of the vendors. Whether its graphic, interior, or any other form of design, these trends can inspire and influence many types of design.

Sustainability
Sustainability was everywhere, showing up in everything from materials to showroom design. Many manufacturers focused on circular design, highlighting how waste and renewable resources can be transformed into new products. One standout example was a chair made from a bio-based material created from corn and wood flour, displaying the manufacturing journey of transforming corn kernels to a fully functional chair, and yes, it was actually comfortable. Green walls, living plants, and other biophilic elements were also common throughout the show, reflecting the industry's continued focus on creating healthier spaces while reducing environmental impact. The overall message was clear: sustainability is no longer a premium or add-on, it's becoming a core part of design.

Reimagined Nostalgia
A surprising standout amongst the commercial interior design trends was the reimagined take on nostalgia. Midcentury modern influences were everywhere, but rather than simply recreating classic designs, manufacturers are updating familiar forms with contemporary materials, colors, and functionality. The 1970s were also making common appearances, with inspired fabrics and patterns being applied to clean, modern silhouettes. Details such as leather, felt, and boucle added a handcrafted feel while hinting at flexibility and adaptability. Across the show, designers were succeeding at paying homage to the past while still designing for the future. The result was furniture that felt both familiar and fresh, blending residential comfort with the evolving needs of modern workplaces.

Color
It may seem like an obvious answer, but I was thrilled to see color stand out as one of this year's commercial interior design trends. In a world full of Pantone white and ultra-modern, neutral-colored, sleek design, the vibrancy, diversity, and relationships of color pairings used in both the showrooms and the designs themselves made them much more interesting. Whether it was through furniture fabrics, statement artistic pieces, branding, and more, the emphasis on color is not only nice to look at, but is beneficial for existing in commercial environments such as workplaces, hotels, healthcare facilities, etc.

Lighting
Lighting is another one of those elements that may seem like an obvious piece of a design show, but the variety of ways in which it was displayed is what really stood out. Long gone are the days where a blinding fluorescent flicker is the only light gracing the ceiling. Designers are innovating dozens of new and fresh ways to light a space without the typical “corporate” feel. Decorative pendant lights are becoming a popular accent for the more casual corners of commercial spaces. Intense LED lighting can now be incorporated within structural elements like tiles and baffles. Wall-mounted fixtures and task lighting are represented in hundreds of ways, with variances on hues, warmth, size, and more. We all know lighting is one of the most important aspects of elevating a space, but NeoCon definitely showed just how much you can do with it.
While NeoCon is centered on commercial interiors, many of the trends on display extend far beyond furniture and finishes. Sustainability, nostalgic influences, bold color palettes, and thoughtful lighting are shaping the future of design across disciplines. Just as interior designers are finding new ways to create meaningful, engaging experiences, graphic designers can draw inspiration from these same ideas through sustainable practices, vintage-inspired visuals, expressive color use, and intentional storytelling. If NeoCon 2026 proved anything, it's that great design isn't about following trends, but about reinterpreting them in ways that feel relevant, functional, and human.
